Erica Nagel, M.F.A., Education and Engagement at McCarter Theatre Center

This seminar will explore the art of documentary theater, a process that uses verbatim text from primary sources, such as interviews and transcripts as dialogue for a theatrical script. After an introductory performance by members of McCarter’s OnStage Seniors ensemble, Erica Nagel and Liz Green, Directors of the OnStage Seniors Project, will guide participants through a process of choosing a theme, gathering stories through personal interviews, turning interviews into monologues or scenes, and coaching successful performances of the pieces created. This process can be a valuable tool for deepening student understanding of an engagement with any primary source text, literary theme, or historical moment.
