My name is Midori Kawaue and I graduated from the Teacher Preparation Program in 2024. I am currently working as a social studies teacher at Hightstown High School, teaching U.S. History to both ESL and general-education students. English is not the home language of the majority of students in my school district, and our school focuses on training teachers in pedagogy for teaching ESL students. I am particularly passionate about introducing U.S. history to ESL students, and helping them understand the cultural, economic, social, and political phenomenon of the United States.
The social studies department of Hightstown High School embraces an interdisciplinary approach to education. They offer courses that encourage students to explore the impact of current elections, monitor contemporary politics, and use philosophy to make sense of day-to-day phenomena. The school’s commitment to civic engagement and critical thinking are key features of its curriculum.
I am always grateful for the exceptional mentorship and resources provided by Princeton’s Teacher Preparation Program. My adviser Dr. Ashley T. Jaffee has supported me every step of the way, my peers have inspired me to implement different strategies in the classroom, and the warm environment of the Teacher Preparation Program has kept me going despite some stressful and difficult times as a student-teacher. I am excited to continue to make an impact on social studies education in New Jersey and guide students to become informed and active citizens.
