Bio/Description

Cindy Assini '04 is the current Social Studies Supervisor in West Windsor, New Jersey. Previously, she taught eighth-grade social studies in Flemington, NJ, covering U.S. history from its beginnings through the Civil War. She also co-taught a section of social studies alongside a special education teacher, served as a team leader, tutored students in a before-school program, and advised the Environmental Club.

Cindy is passionate about teaching because she enjoys connecting with students and thrives in the dynamic, ever-changing environment of the classroom. Although the challenges of teaching can sometimes feel overwhelming, the successes she has experienced make her work deeply fulfilling. She likens teaching to being in a washing machine’s spin cycle, but she treasures the rewarding moments that make her feel as though she’s soaring.

Over the years, Dr. Assini has gained valuable insights into both herself and her profession. One of her key lessons is to recognize the uniqueness of the thousands of interactions teachers have each week, while adhering to the universal principle of treating others as you would like to be treated. Although she appreciates the practical strategies she’s developed to save time and maximize learning, she believes the most impactful teaching stems from strong relationships—something no lesson plan can fully capture.

Cindy’s connection with TPP has included attending events, contributing to a project on social studies standards, and speaking to future student teachers. This collaboration has given her the chance to reflect on a variety of topics, from maintaining motivation to fostering inclusivity for LGBTQ students and families. Earning her Master’s in Educational Leadership from TCNJ enhanced her teaching and deepened her understanding of how schools and districts operate.

Cindy’s love of learning has kept her engaged in professional development throughout her career. In September 2014, she and her husband, Andrew, hosted a teacher from Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany. In 2017, she earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership from Rutgers University, and the following year, she was recognized as an Emerging Leader by ASCD. She now serves on the board of the NJ Social Studies Supervisors Association, where she helps provide professional learning opportunities for educators across the state.
