Event Description

Our students likely have only general notions of what service might be, and our schools may not provide guidance on a practical definition of “community service.” Are our passionate musical and artistic high school students missing out on ways that they can fulfill their community service while also developing and cultivating their artistic practice? This seminar will explore service and engagement-based learning for our musical and, by extension, artistic students. We will also facilitate general discussion about each of our unique educational contexts and local communities, and what kind of avenues exist for our students to use their musical passion for the betterment of others. As arts educators, at all grade levels, how might we help our schools re-imagine service and community engagement, especially as it concerns the music and the arts, to encourage more activity? This seminar will also introduce teachers to Trenton Arts at Princeton (Trenton) and share the transformational stories of college students who regularly share their own gifts as artists and teachers with students from Trenton.
