The Program in Teacher Preparation is approved by the New Jersey Department of Education and is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) to offer students the opportunity to earn the initial New Jersey state subject area licensure (the Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing) that enables them to teach at the middle and/or secondary school levels in the following academic areas: art, English, mathematics, music, psychology, science (in the areas of biological science, chemistry, earth science, physical science, and physics), social studies, psychology, and world languages in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. Certificates can be transferred through reciprocity agreements between other states and the State of New Jersey.

After completing the Program in Teacher Preparation, students qualify to have their credentials submitted to the State of New Jersey for the Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing. Students must take and pass the appropriate PRAXIS examination(s) for the subjects and levels for which they are seeking certification. Students completing Practice Teaching in the fall must take the PRAXIS examinations no later than the November administration, and those completing Practice Teaching in the spring must take the examinations no later than the March administration. The Program in Teacher Preparation is designed to prepare students to earn the initial teaching license in New Jersey, the Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS).  The CEAS can then be transferred to other states through reciprocity agreements between those states and the State of New Jersey. The transfer of the New Jersey CEAS may require a state-specific test or specific course requirements stipulated by a particular state. Students interested in being certified to teach in other states are urged to consult the department of education websites for the states in which they are seeking certification to learn about the specific requirements of those states. Students may also consult with the staff of the Program in Teacher Preparation for information or guidance.
