It feels amazing to be able to take charge of my own classroom and to see my students grow and learn every single day!

After completing Teacher Prep in spring 2017, I began by teaching 8th grade and 10th grade Honors English at The King's Academy, which is a private Christian school in Sunnyvale, CA (suburban).

It feels amazing to be able to take charge of my own classroom and to see my students grow and learn every single day! My students give me a reason to smile every day; they are so brilliant and funny and creative and compassionate and curious! My favorite part of teaching is still developing relationships with students and getting to know them as individuals as well as sharing with them my genuine heart for English literature and for their personal and academic growth. I am learning that there is always more that I can to do to help each individual student develop confidence, curiosity, and character in and out of the classroom. I've also been learning to be more and more hands-off and to experiment with different methods of allowing students to manage and take responsibility for their own learning (such as through creative activities and socratic seminars). Of course, my first few months were very difficult, especially with the workload of essay-grading. However, I have developed a better work-life balance now in the second semester, and I have learned that it is often better to slow down the pace or to do fewer activities so that students are not stressed out about workload and can instead focus on learning and enjoying the process.
