My first teaching position will be  2017-18 in 6th grade English and Social Studies at the Abraham Joshua Heschel School (Heschel) in NYC. It’s a nursery-12 Jewish day school with a focus on pluralism and an acceptance of multiple interpretations of what being Jewish means. After finishing TPP in December, I worked as a leave replacement teacher in East Brunswick, where I student taught, for three and a half months. It was fantastic to continue to learn from a group that I admire and respect so much. I then spent the summer at Camp Ramah in the Berkshires on the performing arts staff, working on projects including song and dance festivals, regular song sessions after meals, and four large plays over the course of the summer.

I’m definitely nervous about beginning my first full year teaching in fall 2017, mere days after returning from camp. I feel hopeful that my time teaching last winter has helped me prepare for this year, but this is a completely new environment for me. I haven’t ever spent any significant time in a private school, either as a student or a teacher. Overall, I’m very excited to learn from the teachers at Heschel and hopefully add to the rich environment.
