Kathleen Nolan is a lecturer and program associate in the Teacher Certification Program and coordinates the Teacher Prep Urban Specialization. Dr. Nolan is also a lecturer in the Freshman Seminars Program and American Studies where she teaches seminars on urban education.
Dr. Nolan began her career in education as a high school English as a second language teacher and curriculum developer in the Bronx, NY. She has over 10 years of experience working in teacher preparation programs and has taught courses in cultural perspectives, ESL methods, bilingual education history and policy, second language acquisition theory, social foundations, the social and political context of urban schooling, and qualitative research methods.
Dr. Nolan holds a MS.Ed. in TESL and a Ph.D. in urban education from the City University of New York, Graduate Center. Her research interests include the social context of urban schools, education policy, inequality, school discipline, culturally responsive pedagogy, and ethnographic methods. She is published in education journals, such as, International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education, Teachers College Record, and Discourse: Studies in the Cultural Politics of Education. She is the author of the 2011 book, Police in the Hallways: Discipline in an Urban High School (University of Minnesota Press).
